The company which was established under the initiative of Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Research Laboratory employees was located in the facilities of the university for the first few years. ENDEMIK was established and headed for a few years by the chair of the mentioned laboratory, prof. dr. Disease prevention - Tick-Borne Encephalitis Disease Outcomes
A total of 188 people with a history of tick-borne encephalitis were monitored at a health centre in Lithuania. The monitoring was conducted by neuropathologists according to the unified plan developed by the Scientific Research Laboratory of Natural Focal Infections of Vilnius University, Faculty of Medicine. Medical observation and corresponding testing of former infected patients, in order to determine the frequency of remaining symptoms, their nature and severity, was started after 6 months from the date of disease. Repeated health checks were continued every 6 months, and in some cases – once a year.
Out of 188 medically monitored former patients 67 were recognized as fully healthy (35.6 percent). For 121 individuals (64.4 percent), various residual effects of the disease were found after 6 months to 6 years after the onset of the disease. Each of them still had several signs of morbidity. Below are details of the consequences remaining constantly after tick-borne encephalitis (the absolute number and percentage of individuals with corresponding complaints, calculated from the number of 188):
- memory failures: 85 (45.2 percent),
- mental changes: 21 (11.2 percent),
- sleep disorders: 56 (29,8 percent),
- headaches: 114 (60.6 percent),
- muscle weakness: 34 (18.1 percent),
- hearing, balance disorders: 22 (11.7 percent),
- decreased vision: 10 (5.3 percent),
- smell, taste disorders: 2 (1.1 percent),
- urinary incontinence during the night: 5 (2.6 percent),
- sexual impotence: 7 (3.7 percent),
- reduction of working ability: 78 (41.5 percent),
- determined disability: 14 (7.4 percent),
Five persons died from tick-borne encephalitis.
If tick-borne encephalitis is infected from untreated cow's milk, the disease course and its consequences are less severe than those from being infected by ticks.
