The company which was established under the initiative of Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine Research Laboratory employees was located in the facilities of the university for the first few years. ENDEMIK was established and headed for a few years by the chair of the mentioned laboratory, prof. dr. Leontijus Motiejūnas, laureate of the National Science Premium, member of New York Science Academy, who still provides the establishment with his consultations.
Disease prevention - what to do
If the Tick has Attached Itself…
If the tick had attached itself, and you succeeded to remove it alive and undamaged, the tick can be examined for infection of Lyme disease germs. After determining this, a short preventive course of treatment can be prescribed that prevents the disease. Ideally, the tick should be removed with a special device – this is done in all of our subsidiaries. Dead ticks can also be examined, but this examination is quite complex (by applying the PCR – polymerase chain reaction) and is more expensive. In the absence of the tick, the presence of Lyme disease, even before the onset of the disease, can be determined from a sample of your blood. The first blood sample should be taken as early as possible (no later than in 5 days after the tick attachment) and the second in 3-4 weeks. A comparison of the two tests are made and if it is discovered that specific antibodies against Lyme disease pathogens – borellias – appeared in the second blood sample (or their number has increased), the infection and a high likelihood of the disease will be determined. In such case a short course of preventive treatment will be prescribed. A single blood test done in 3-4 weeks after the tick attachment can also indicate that the infection has just happened, but without knowing the results of the first blood sample, errors are sometimes possible. All this applies only to Lyme disease because often it shows no symptoms at the beginning, and it may occur only after one month or even a year.
In case of tick-borne encephalitis infection, the disease starts within a month (usually in 7-15 days), acutely, followed by high-temperature, headache and other symptoms resembling severe influenza. In Lithuania, deaths from the disease occur annually. Due to the short incubation period and the acute beginning of the disease, diagnostic laboratory blood tests are applied only for the confirmation of the tick-borne encephalitis diagnosis, when the patient is sick and is treated in hospital (in-patient treatment). Therefore, the only preventive measure for this disease is vaccination. Lately, vaccination is recommended also after the tick attachment (only with the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine Encepur of the German manufacturer).
